Home-made bonnet scoop and burnouts in front of cops

Officers targeting high-risk driving offenders saw the man attempt the maneuver in the south-east Melbourne suburb of Noble Park at 1.45pm on April 14.

Police said the man, who also allegedly tested positive to roadside drug and alcohol screenings, was "old enough to know better".

He also allegedly failed to comply with vehicle registration standards due to the home-made bonnet scoop on the hood of the car and his bald tyres.

"To do a burnout at an intersection on a Sunday afternoon while allegedly both alcohol and drug-affected is extremely dangerous," Achilles Taskforce sergeant Paul Holtzinger said.

"Your reaction times are severely impacted, and it is so easy to lose control of your car and crash into another vehicle or pedestrian," he said.

"This incident could have resulted in both the driver or another innocent person being seriously injured or even killed."

The man's license restrictions require him to have a zero blood alcohol reading when driving but his roadside breath test allegedly returned a 0.176 result.

He also tested positive to cannabis, police said.

The 48-year-old is expected to be charged with driving a vehicle causing loss of traction, causing unnecessary smoke, not complying with registration standards, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and breaching his zero alcohol license condition.

His car was impounded for 30 days, costing $913, and his licence was immediately suspended, police said.
