An elderly man has been charged with a string of offences after allegedly breaking into homes at Bexley North, Carlton and Beverly Hills and stealing jewellery, cash and other items.
The man, aged 77, whom police say has a previous conviction, was allegedly found with housebreaking tools when he was arrested on Tuesday.
A police spokesman said, about 12.30pm on Tuesday, the man allegedly broke into a home in Carrisbrook Avenue, Bexley North, and stole several items of jewellery.
“A witness saw the man inside the home and called police who arrived a short time later,” the spokesman said.
“The man allegedly ran into an adjacent property, where a resident also called police.”
The spokesman said St George police sighted the man on Kingsland Road North and arrested him.
“Police will allege the man was found with housebreaking implements, jewellery and a sum of cash on his person,” he said.
The man was taken to St George Police Station where, after further inquiries, he was also charged with several other alleged break-ins in Carlton and Bexley North in May this year.
The charges include four counts of break, enter and steal from a house, two counts of trespassing and one count each of possessing housebreaking implements, goods in custody; and commit indictable offence having previous conviction.
The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on August 8.
