Twice delisted, two knee constructions and after seven consecutive one-year rookie deals, Western Bulldogs utility Roarke Smith has finally hit the jackpot.
Smith has been the ultimate battler during his 37-game AFL career, doing just enough each year to earn a spot on the list.
He was delisted in both 2017 and 2020, only for the Bulldogs to re-rookie him each time.
Those hardships and Smith's ability to battle through were rewarded on Tuesday when he received a two-year contract extension.
Smith produced a career-best season in 2021, with the 25-year-old playing in all four of the Bulldogs' finals.
He also kicked the Bulldogs' first goal of their 74-point grand-final loss to Melbourne.
"Having Roarke locked in for another two seasons is great, not only for the club but also for him and his own development," Bulldogs list manager Sam Power said.
"His athleticism and versatility are key strengths of his game, while his team-first approach is commendable. We see him as an important part of our future.
"We're excited to see what else he can bring to AFL level in the red, white and blue moving forward."
Geelong have delisted father-son selection Oscar Brownless for the second time.
Brownless, the son of Geelong great Billy Brownless, failed to play an AFL game for the Cats.
He played 27 VFL games and kicked nine goals over his three seasons with Geelong.
The 21-year-old was runner up in the Cats' VFL best and fairest after averaging 22 possessions this year, helping his side to a top-four finish.
West Coast re-signed defender Luke Foley for another two years.
"It's great to be going around for another two seasons at the footy club," said Foley, who was selected with pick 31 in the 2018 national draft.
"Three seasons in, it's gone very quick. I've loved my time at the club."
