Sydney's popular Vivid winter light festival will return next year.

Billed as the largest celebration of light, music and ideas in the southern hemisphere, the three-week festival attracts more than two million people to Sydney every winter.

It was cancelled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Now the festival will be back in August 2021 and could be key to the recovery of Sydney's tourism and creative arts sectors, NSW Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said on Wednesday.

"We hope that Sydneysiders, residents of NSW and visitors from around the country will start planning now and book accommodation, tours and attractions to make the most of their Vivid Sydney 2021 experience," he said.

Vivid was established in 2009 and features a 'Light Walk' of dozens of light installations and large-scale projections, mostly around the harbour.

The government is calling for artists, designers, creatives, architects and engineers to submit ideas, designs and concepts for the festival by November 23.

Vivid Sydney is owned, managed and produced by Destination NSW.
