To play in one grand final is a highlight. But what happens when you get to play in two grand finals - in the same day. That's what happened to Liverpool boy Ali Karnib on Saturday.
Playing for the Guildford Owls, his first assignment was the under-13s division one grand final against the Rouse Hill Rhinos. Defending their title from last year, Ali led his team to a 36-10 victory to complete an undefeated season where they conceded only 16-points in the regular season.
Ali, who goes to Westfields Sports High School, scored two tries playing in the second row and set up another try. The 13-year-old kicked two goals to complete a memorable performance. But his day wasn't finished.
Like he had done for the past six weeks to cover for a lack of numbers, he laced up the boots for his brother Adam's team in the under-15 division two grand final.
Ironically the opponents were also Rouse Hill. But there would be no fairytale - the Owls lost 16-4.
For Ali, the shortened season had turned into a busy one. One game followed by lunch and then straight to game No.2 where sometimes he wouldn't even have time to warm up. He played three games in the under-14s before playing two grades above himself for the remainder of the season.
His off-season will see him play Oztag as he continues his push for junior representative honours in 2021.
