With the recent opening of the M8 toll road, residents of South-West Sydney are now subjected to two new tolls. The new M8 tunnel and a toll for the existing M5 East, which until last month was free. This will see an increase of $6.95 per trip for drivers, at a time when individuals and the economy are struggling.
The new toll has been levied even though the road has not been upgraded. For drivers who need to use the road five days a week, this will cost approximately $3,300 and will have to be absorbed into already strained budgets. The tolls will then continue to increase by 4 per cent each year.
Research by University of Sydney's Institute of Transport Logistics Studies found that Sydney has the most kilometres of tolls anywhere in the world.
I am supporting a petition to have this decision debated in NSW Parliament which requires 10,000 signatures. The government needs to be sent a message by our community that this decision is neither fair nor reasonable. I would be happy to send you a copy of the petition if you would like to add your name to the cause.
