I am delighted to be part of the first print edition of the Liverpool City Champion after the coronavirus shutdown. I like reading the Champion online but am looking forward to seeing it in print from today. Its another sign that our lives are returning to normal.
Liverpool City Council has been getting on with the job of delivering for our community in these tough times.
Just last week we adopted our Liverpool City Centre Public Domain Master Plan. Its our 10-year vision to create a greener, more vibrant and active city centre while fostering an 18-hour economy.
There are 76 Council projects highlighted in the plan, including wider footpaths, dedicated cycleways, more street trees, public art and street furniture. Over the next 12 months, well be planting 245 mature trees and upgrading pavements in the city centre.
Im pleased to tell you about two great wins for our community that came about as a result of Council advocacy.
We raised the need for a temporary car park at Edmondson Park Station to fill the gap when a number of spots will become unavailable during construction of a new commuter car park. Transport for NSW has agreed to build a temporary car park on the northern side of the station.
Transport for NSW has also agreed to work closely with us and our community on plans to upgrade Hoxton Park Road as part of our flagship Fifteenth Avenue Smart Transit (FAST) Corridor project. We want to ensure the best quality public transport is in place between Liverpool, Western Sydney Aerotropolis and Western Sydney International Airport before the airport opens in 2026.
Finally, we recently celebrated Refugee Week and Id like to thank our citys multicultural community for the cultural diversity and vibrancy you bring to our growing city. We welcomed 4230 refugees to Liverpool between 2016 and 2019, thats 14.5 per cent of the total intake in NSW.
Liverpool is the face of multicultural Australia and we are proud to be home to residents from around the world.
