GROWING THE SOUTH-WEST | Hume launches new social-housing at Liverpool

Tier 1 community-housing provider Hume Community Housing has opened a new, environmentally-sustainable social-housing development at Liverpool, in partnership with the NSW Government to project-manage developing 23 units at 188-190 Moore Street.

The ribbon was cut by Hume chairman Bob Vine and Hume chief executive Nicola Lemon, with Holsworthy MP Melanie Gibbons, Liverpool mayor Wendy Waller and staff from Planning, Industry and Environment.

Now the project is complete, Hume is managing the tenancies and property maintenance. Customers have been moving in since July.

Ms Lemon said: "Hume is proud to be selected to work in partnership with the NSW Government to deliver additional social housing to Liverpool, where housing affordability is a real challenge.

"Everyone has the right to safe and secure housing, which in turn provides the necessary foundations to pursue education, training and employment along with social connectedness that comes from being a part of a community."

The Moore Street development is now home to senior sisters Mira and Rada who were experiencing challenges with mobility as they aged. Their former homes were in multi-storey buildings with stairs that were becoming increasingly difficult.

Hume was able to transfer both sisters from their existing units in separate buildings into the new development. The sisters were even more excited to secure neighbouring units.

"We're so happy," Rada said. "We walk together, we eat together and we do everything together and don't feel alone any more.

Mira said: "We're excited to spend our first Christmas together and are planning on cooking a special meal. We look forward to getting involved in community events in the coming year, too."

Ms Lemon said: "Hume is pleased we could work with our customers to transfer to Moore Street, meaning the sisters could live closely and be comfortably housed in apartments that will help them to age in place."

The project features:

  • 9 x 2-bedroom units;
  • 14 x 1-bedroom units;
  • 4 x 2-bedroom adaptable units; and
  • basement carpark.
