Liverpool sprinters Jesse Chukwudi and Alyssa Michael were among 37 students from Sydney Catholic primary schools to receive a 2019 Sydney Archdiocesan Primary Sport Award last Wednesday following silver medals in national 4x100m relay events.
Jesse, a Year 6 student at St Christopher's Catholic Primary School at Holsworthy, won a silver medal as part of the NSWPSSA boys' 12 Years 4x100-metre relay at the recent School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships in Darwin.
"It feels good to get an award," he said. "It makes me feel like I'm a part of a larger group because they do athletics as well. I want to see where it takes me."
St Therese's Catholic Primary School pupil Alyssa also won a silver medal as part of the NSW PSSA girls' 10 Years 4 x100-metre relay at the same national event.
"I feel amazed," the year 5 student said. "I train every week. I like running because I can show what I can do and make new friends."
The pupils received their awards from paralympian Sarah Walsh who collected three consecutive primary sports awards.
"My story isn't about this girl who was talented from day one, my story is about a girl who worked hard to make her dreams a reality," she said.
