An out-of-town family have bought one of Newcastle's most talked about properties.
Guy Bunder told Domain in June he had never worked on a more challenging project.
So, it was a bittersweet moment when the director of Made Architectural Constructions put his unique Merewether home at 21 Flowerdale Avenue up for sale.
The Black House, as it became known for its charred timber cladding exterior, combined Japanese architecture, inspired by burnt pieces of wood found on the property, with a minimalist approach.
It passed in at auction but was secured on October 1 for $2.18 million. It is the first time a home in Flowerdale Avenue has cracked $2 million, according to Australian Property Monitors data. Only one other sale had surpassed $1 million there.
The one-of-a-kind property was marketed by Jesse Wilton and Mark Kentwell, of PRDnationwide Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and drew plenty of interest throughout its campaign.
Mr Bunder originally planned to live in the four-level architectural masterpiece but decided to sell it and will instead live in a property above the Black House that he has built off View Street.
The Black House is one that makes a statement and was awarded in the New Houses category at the 2019 Newcastle Architecture Awards. Inside, a palette of precast concrete walls and polished concrete floors is offset by reclaimed oak feature walls, bespoke metal floating staircases, custom timber cabinetry and vertical green walls.
There are four bedrooms, including a top-level masters retreat, three bathrooms and an internal lift. Outside, the home blends into its natural surrounds and has rooftop gardens on every level.
