Greens' bill to ban taxpayer cash for coal

Taxpayer money would be banned from being put towards coal-fired power stations under a proposal from the Greens in federal parliament.

Greens MP Adam Bandt introduced a private member's bill to the lower house on Monday, which he said was vital to combat climate change.

"It is utter madness to use public funds to prop up coal-fired power stations or even build new ones," he told parliament.

"But that's what this government wants to do and this parliament must stop them."

If passed, the bill would directly block the government's plan to help underwrite both a coal-fired power station upgrade and feasibility study for a new power plant.
