A NSW Police Force and Australian Border Force investigation into the trafficking of illicit drugs by airline passengers and international mail packages from the US led to the arrest of a 66-year-old man at Cabramatta West yesterday.

In December 2018, detectives from the NSWPF Drug and Firearms Squad and ABF investigators, with assistance from the Australian Federal Police, established a joint investigation to target the importation of cocaine and methamphetamine.

Two people have been stopped by ABF officers at Sydney Airport after allegedly trying to import methylamphetamine and cocaine.

They have both been charged and remain before the courts.

A further five people have been stopped in the US before boarding flights to Sydney.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 66-year-old man at a Cabramatta West home about 12.30pm yesterday (Tuesday, June 4).

Shortly after, a search warrant was executed at the home, where they seized mobile phones and documents.

The man, who is an airport shuttle driver, was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with attempt to import commercial quantity of border-controlled drug and refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court today (Wednesday, June 5).

A further five people have been arrested offshore as a result of this operation, and multiple air cargo consignments have been stopped by our overseas partners before they could reach Australian shores.

In total, 17 kilograms of cocaine and 44 kilograms of methylamphetamine has been seized.

The cocaine has an estimated street value of $5.1 million, and the methylamphetamine has an estimated street value of $13.2 million.
