OUR OWN 'BLUES': Moorebank cadets with Holsworthy state MP Melanie Gibbons at the Wattle Grove Public School Fair on Sunday last week.

On Sunday last week, the Moorebank squadron of the local Australian Air League youth group participated in the bi-annual Wattle Grove Public SchoolFair.

The cadets opened and closed the event with their marching band, going around the fairground and entertaining crowds while drumming up interest for the squadron along the route.

Commanding Officer RaymondBell said: "It's a testament to the hard work all the cadets put in, taking time out of their weekend to support their local community but also going back and supporting the school from which many of the cadets graduated."

Since 2011 the squadron has played a major role in the event and it's become a favourite among members thanks in part to the excellent work the school has done in cultivating a festival atmosphere.

About 20 members were there on May 5, including band members, the flag party and the various officers.

Squadron Sergeant LachlanHyde said: "It's great being able to march with the squadron at these community events, seeing all the glee and happiness, especially watching kids try to march behind the band or pretending to drum in the air. It's quite an incredible experience, you know."

The league was formed in 1934 and is a youth organisation for boys and girls 8 and up, which fosters a spirit of aviation in young people and promotes good citizenship.

League officers all have Working with Children checks.

Cadets are given opportunities to join the squadron band, learn ceremonial drill and make friends. Activities include aviation theory, flying, ceremonial drill, physical activities, modelling and camping. Members 14 and over have an opportunity to learn to fly at the league's Camden Air Activities Centre with qualified volunteer instructors.

The Moorebank squadron meets on Fridays during school terms, from 7pm to 9pm, at Nuwarra Public School on McKay Avenue at Moorebank.
