An elderly man is in Liverpool hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a car at Greenacre on Saturday night.

Bankstown police officers were told the man, 78, was hit by a Toyota Starlet as he crossed Waterloo Road, 30 metres north of Greenacre Road, just after 6pm on Saturday.

He was treated at the scene for a suspected fractured pelvis and head injuries before being taken to hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the Toyota, a Bankstown man, 49, was taken to Bankstown hospital for mandatory testing.

It's believed the older man was not on a marked pedestrian crossing when hit.
