The NSW Seniors Festival has been brought forward for 2019. The majority of events and activities organised throughout the state to be part of it will occur between February 13 and 24.
The event has been created for all NSW people over 60, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over the age of 50, and any person over 50 that has a lifelong disability.
The theme for 2019 is ‘Love Your Life’.
The inspiration behind this choice came from the fact that Valentine’s Day falls within the dates of the festival for the first time in its history.
The festival’s website says “We hope you’ll find new ways to love your life during the festival. There are hundreds of free and heavily discounted events taking place across the state.”
Community groups and local organisations have submitted their events to be included on the official list, and to be accepted they had to fulfil the following criteria:
- be open to the public
- be based in NSW only
- be free or specially discounted
- be held between Monday, February 11 – Friday, March 1, 2019 (the extra latitude allows more events to be included in the festival), and
- not promote religious activities or encourage gambling (e.g. bingo).
To find out what’s on near you, or extra details about the Sydney events about to be mentioned, you just go to seniorsfestival.nsw.gov.au.
Along with the Love Your Life theme, they are also promoting a category of events called Love to Dance.
From Wongawilli to Wentworthville there are many dancing styles for you to try. Baulkham Hills will even include a session designed for people with Parkinson’s disease and their carers.
Seniors Festival Expo
The expo is on Thursday and Friday, February 14 and 15, in the same venue as before; Hall 4, Exhibition Centre, International Convention Centre (ICC), Sydney.
The festival website has some information about using public transport to get there. Just head to their news section to find it.
Entry to the expo is free and in there you’ll find “over 50 exhibitors, live stage entertainment and plenty of games and giveaways,” the website says. The site also has a full list of those exhibitors with a weblink to each of them.
Premier’s Gala Concerts
These free concerts are also on Thursday and Friday, February 14 and 15. You do need to book in advance though so be quick. Go to the website or call 1300 130 613 to see a variety of performers from Marina Prior to Adam Brand and more.
Wendy Harmer will be hosting a great line up of entertainers, although this show has proved so popular the tickets are already gone.
