NSW all-rounder Param Uppal (49) moved his season tally past 400 runs as Fairfield Liverpool battled to keep pace with Eastern Suburbs at Rosedale Oval on Saturday.
After rain lashed the region on Friday night, the Lions won the toss and posted 142 from 61 overs.
Uppal was one of only four people to reach double figures with Jeremy Maher (25) and Kazi Szymanski (16 not out) combining for a vital 46-run 10th wicket stand.
On his first grade debut, Atharva Patil made 2 and was part of a collapse that saw the home team lose six wickets for 15 runs.
The visitors also found batting difficult reaching 1-74 off 35 overs at stumps.
English seamer Szymanski (1-12) got the key wicket of former Australian wicketkeeper Peter Nevill.
In second grade, Easts will resume at 0-5 in reply to the Lions total of 8-237. Captain Russell Wilcoxon top scored with 62.
Third and fourth grade will also be bowling on day two with the Lions posting 138 and 204 respectively.
Fifth grade will be hunting outright points after dismissing Easts for just 16. Simon Grove (5-4,3-14) did the damage with the ball with Easts leading by 35-runs with three second innings wickets remaining after the Lions declared at 5-54.
