The Moorebank squadron of the Australian Air League local youth group marched with crowds at Liverpool Council’s Christmas in the Mall event last Saturday, December 1.

The Air League is a voluntary youth organisaton which was formed in 1934 to foster a spirit of aviation in youth and to promote good citizenship.

To mark the end of the event, the cadets who are aged eight and older, escorted Mayor Wendy Waller and Santa Claus to the Christmas tree.

After the Christmas tree lights were switched on, the squadron band officially closed the event with a medley of jingle bells and songs including When the Saints go Marching in and Waltzing Matilda.

Commanding officer Bell said it was a great event.

“It’s a fantastic way to start the festive season with a performance by the cadets. It’s also a testament to the hard work all the cadets put in, taking time out of their weekend to support their local community,” Mr Bell said.

Ms Waller later wrote a message on Facebook to thank the league.

“Thank you to the Australian Air League Moorebank squadron for the special escort down to the Christmas-tree lighting,” she wrote.

The league provides a number of activities to cadets, such as aviation theory, flying for members 14 and over, ceremonial drill, physical activities and camping.
