A raging forest fire on Mount Serra, northern Italy, has forced the evacuation of around 700 people, officials say.
The governor of Tuscany, Enrico Rossi, said in a press conference on Tuesday that 1483 acres had been obliterated by the fire which has proven difficult to control due to strong winds which keep changing direction.
"We must aim to tame the fire, at least in the most critical parts, in the afternoon," said mayor of Calci, Massimilano Ghiment.
"There is an intensification of the wind from 5 pm onwards. From 10 am of tomorrow the wind should start to wane," he added.
Whilst authorities continue to fight the flames, regional officials said the evacuees would not be able to return to their homes until at least Wednesday evening.
Officials believe the fire, which broke out on Monday, was caused by arson and the mayor appealed for the police to find those responsible as soon as possible.
Schools in the region would remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, until the blaze was under control.
