The Marconi Stallions and Bonnyrigg White Eagles have advanced to the business end of the FFA Cup after surviving spirited challenges from NPL 2 opposition on Wednesday night.

It’s the second time both clubs have reached the final 32 of the national tournament after achieving the feat in 2016.

Second half goals to Sean Rooney and Brandon Vella helped the Stallions to a 2-1 win over GHFA Spirit FC at Marconi Stadium.

Fresh off their win against the Wollongong Wolves, GHFA Spirit got off to a good start but couldn’t capitalise on several first half chances. The Stallions class prevailed in the second half to book their ticket to the round of 32.

The in-form White Eagles were given a scare at Valentine Sports Park by NPL 2 outfit Hills United trailing 1-0 early in the first half.

But Brian Brown’s team rallied with goals in the 51st and 74th minute to advance in the competition, which will now be joined by the A-League clubs.

The FFA Cup round of 32 draw will be held on Tuesday, June 26.
