The lights have been switched on to mark the start of Vivid Sydney, with its 10th "birthday bash" expected to be the biggest and best yet.
A 3D lighting display illuminated the iconic Opera House sails on Friday night as the annual light and music festival kicked off.
NSW Tourism Minister Adam Marshall expects to break last year's record crowd of more than 2.3 million people, who spent an estimated $143 million in the city across the 23-day event.
"This year, if the weather is kind, then we anticipate seeing even more than that," Mr Marshall told reporters on Thursday.
Clear skies are forecast for Sydney until at least Tuesday night, according to the weather bureau.
"It will be our biggest, our best, our brightest Vivid yet, with lots of new inclusions this year, (and) we want to make it a huge birthday bash," Mr Marshall said.
For the first time Luna Park, Government House and Customs House will light up the night, and installations will be extended at Taronga Zoo, Barangaroo, Chatswood and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
An extra 6000 train, ferry, bus and light rail services will be rolled out.
