
Labor Councillor Ali Karnib was appointed deputy mayor of Liverpool, during last week’s council meeting.
During a secret ballot, he received seven out of a possible 11 votes.

This will be Councillor Karnib’s first term as deputy mayor and he will remain in the role until September next year.
Mr Karnib said he was thankful to have been selected and looked forward to serving the people of Liverpool.
“I want to thank every councillor who voted for me,” he said.
“I look forward to working together for Liverpool.”
Mayor Wendy Waller also congratulated Mr Karnib on the being appointed in the role.
OPPOSITION TO ICE ROOM
Also during last week’s council meeting, the new councillors unanimously moved a motion to publicly show their opposition to a controversial ice smoking room being established in Liverpool. The motion affirmed that council did “not support the abrupt manner in which the concept of an ice smoking room was raised”.
