Wanderers inspire juniors

ALLAN McCarlie says the popularity of the Western Sydney Wanderers is having a good effect on player recruitment at Leppington Lions Soccer Club.

The club's junior president said the A-League club's high profile and success has led to many recruits.

"A lot of new families have joined this year," McCarlie said.

"Last year we saw a big increase in the number of girls wanting to play soccer, this trend has continued. The big surge this year has been in the four- and five-year-old age groups.

"These age groups are mixed teams," McCarlie said.

McCarlie said the numbers have risen from 58 to 82 this season.

Southern Districts Soccer Football Association competitions start on Saturday.

McCarlie said the only two age groups which need bolstering are under-11s and under-12s.

'Leppington Oval is the Lions' home ground.
