SAMUEL and Vince Romeo enjoy blowing the whistle on the soccer fields.

The Green Valley brothers, Samuel, 16, and Vince, 19, are two of 150 accredited referees in the Southern Districts Referees Incorporated.

The new Southern Districts Soccer Football Association season starts on Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6.

And when you ask Samuel he'll tell who is the better one with the whistle.

"I am the best referee," Samuel said.

But Vince came back with his reply.

"No, I am," Vince said.

Samuel still plays the game and fits in his refereeing with his schedule during the season.

He plays with Mounties under-17s, while Vince concentrates on refereeing these days.

Vince said he and his brother have also controlled games together as referees and assistant referees.

"We would like to see new referees around our age groups come and join and look after games," Vince Romeo said.

The new term assistant referees replaces the former tag of linesmen.

Southern Districts Soccer Referees Incorporated was founded in 1947.

Secretary Glenn Sheaves said they are always on the lookout for new recruits.

"We administer soccer referees in the Fairfield and Liverpool council areas," Sheaves said.

"We also referee youth league throughout Sydney under the Football NSW Referee Development Program."

Sheaves said cadet referees start at 13 and referee under 10s and under-11s on a modified field.

Full field referees start at 14 with level five accreditation.

He said referees and assistant referees are paid with the fees set by Football NSW.
