This Thursday, December 7, will mark an incredible milestone for the couple as they celebrate 60-years of marriage with the people they love most.

Instead of a big celebration, both Mr and Mrs Nelson insisted on an intimate dinner with their children, grandchildren and the newest family member, their great grandson, 2.

Their daughter Debie McLean said they chose to celebrate at a seafood restaurant as her parents are both seafood-enthusiasts. To make the event all the more special their children have booked them into a Wollongong hotel overnight where they will enjoy a family dinner and buffet breakfast together the next morning.

“It’s a milestone – you don’t see many marriages lasting this long these days! We were trying to find decorations, cards and balloons with ‘60 years’ but we couldn’t find anything,” Mrs McLean said.

“They’re still very much in love and are lost without each other. They do everything together – when mum was in hospital dad stayed with her all day and would even bring in his lunch so they could eat together. And vise versa. When dad became ill a few years ago mum was lost without him. Now my brother Steven lives in the granny flat at the back of my parents’ home which is really handy as he looks after them if they need anything.”

Growing up, Peter Nelson lived at Tambar Springs in North West NSW and Patricia lived at Milsons Point. They met when Peter was playing cricket at Lavender Bay and married soon after on December 7, 1957 at the Star of the Sea Church, Milsons Point.

Their first child Steven was born in 1958 and they welcomed their second child Debie in 1961. In 1964 the family moved to Miller when it was still a new estate and it has remained their home since.

The couple often tell their children and grandchildren, "We remember the days when you could walk down the street and leave your house open or keep your car unlocked - nothing would get stolen and it was still there the next day.”

Their daughter said they had a lot of great memories in the Liverpool area growing up.

“All the children in our street respected dad. All he’d have to do is put his foot down and use his voice and everybody would jump!” she said.

“We want to say thank to our parents, we couldn’t ask for better. They’re loved very much by all the family.

“They’ve always been there for us when we needed help or a shoulder to cry on and we want them to know we’ll always be here for them too.”
