A state government approval of a new Local Environmental Plan for the Liverpool city centre is all that stands between the building of 7000 new units in the CBD
It comes as the Federal Government prepares to reward councils for taking on Sydney’s housing shortage.
Liverpool mayor Wendy Waller said council is doing its bit and is processing development applications “faster than ever before”, with low-risk developments, like family homes being approved online in as little as 24 -hours.
“In fact, what we need now is action from the State and Federal Government to unlock Liverpool’s potential,” she said.
“We are still waiting on NSW Government approval of our new LEP for the city centre which will transform the CBD. Council is already talking to four developers about major residential projects that are held up by the new LEP.”
Apart from increasing housing in the CBD, council is also working on strategic plans for Warwick Farm and Moorebank, while 8,200 homes are set to be built in the new suburb of Edmondson Park over the next 10 years.
Mayor Waller said Liverpool wanted to exceed the Greater Sydney Commission’s target of 8250 homes in the next five years.
She also highlighted the importance of getting transport infrastructure right like the upgrade of Bernera Road to support the new homes in Edmondson Park.
“Local Government has a role to play in increasing housing supply, but so does the state government. Better transport infrastructure is vital to support the burgeoning population in the south west of Sydney,” she said.
“We need the NSW Government to commit to extending the Metro line from Bankstown to Liverpool.
“It would enable us to offer higher density residential development along a railway line specifically built to get people to their workplaces faster.”
