It isn’t likely Liverpool has hosted anyone bigger than the “master of suspense” himself – Alfred Hitchcock.
Many may not know that the English director and producer spent a day betting on horses and assisting bookies at Warwick Farm Racecourse.
In May 1960, Hitch spent about two weeks visiting Sydney for the Australian premiere of Psycho.
Rare images documenting the visit have been released straight from the Fairfax archives as part of a new photo collection called Stars of the Stage and Screen (1940-1960).
The pictures not only follow Hitchcock’s time in Australia, but also many other classic Hollywood celebrities and famous musicians.
Other celebrities featured in the collection include Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Connery and Helen Mirren, as well as musicians Louis Armstrong, ABBA, The Beatles and Bill Haley and the Comets.
The pictures are available to buy online and cost from $35.
