Car fire causes traffic delays on the Harbour Bridge

The car caught fire in a southbound lane near the south pylon about 8.45am.

Traffic had returned to normal by about 10am, a Transport Management Centre spokeswoman said.

Initially, three citybound lanes and one northbound lane were closed but all lanes reopened about 9am.

Buses were delayed by up to 30 minutes and citybound motorists were advised to use Victoria Road and the Gladesville Bridge.

Fire and Rescue NSW were called to extinguish the flames in the car's bonnet before it was towed away.

Smoke was "billowing from the engine ... like a chimney", one caller told 2GB Radio.

An earlier crash in Milsons Point and a breakdown in the Lane Cove Tunnel added to delays on Harbour Bridge bus routes on Wednesday morning.
