The blast of summer heat at the weekend has placed south-eastern Australia on the map as the hottest place on the planet.

Residents near Badgerys Creek saw the mercury climb to 46.4 degs on Saturday, placing the area not much cooler than global hot spot; Ivanhoe Airport recorded a maximum of 47.6 degrees. The late afternoon saw temperatures rise to 45.1 in Holsworthy and 44.5 in Horsley Park. Before Friday, NSW hadn’t had a February day above 42 degs, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
