It was over in three days and ball dominated bat but both Australia and New Zealand's captains hailed the inaugural day-night Test as a success.
The pink ball era is upon us and it seems the question is not if we will see another Test played under lights but when.
Even with the early finish, Cricket Australia could not have wished for a much better pilot for the concept which it has championed.
A total of 123,736 fans walked through the turnstiles over the three days, dwarfing the combined total of the previous 10 days of Test cricket. Whether they turned up purely for the novelty factor is unknown but the atmosphere generated this Test has seldom been seen in this country outside of an Ashes summer.
Opinion was divided pre-Test among Australia's cricketers due to the queries over the pink ball, but captain Steve Smith described the match as a "great innovation".
"It was a great spectacle, to get 120,000 people through the gates in three days is absolutely amazing," Smith said after Australia's thrilling three-wicket victory, which sealed a 2-0 series success over New Zealand. "I thought it was a great spectacle and a great Test match."
The early finish and spate of wickets, however, will be a major talking point when post-mortems are conducted on the historic occasion.
New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum expressed concern day-night Tests will drastically change the way Test cricket is played.
Both teams found that the pink ball swung more under lights, particularly when new, which caused a change of strategy.
Australia made an added effort to preserve their wickets entering the night session to avoid exposing a new batsman, while McCullum believes captains will consider declaring on day one - a tactic rarely seen.
While critics savaged the pitch produced in Nagpur for the three-day Test between India and South Africa, they are likely to be more forgiving of the surface created by Damian Hough.
More grass than usual was left on the Adelaide Test strip in order to preserve the pink ball. Batting proved more difficult as a result, with 37 wickets falling in just under three days at a cost of 22 apiece.
Smith felt the grass covering was greener in the Test than the pitch used for the day-night Shield game at the venue a month ago.
"That created a bit more movement for the bowlers and kept the ball together and swinging for a long period, Smith said.
"The first two Test matches have been dominated by the bat so it's great to see something a little bit different and see the bowlers coming into their own."
McCullum said there was too much grass on the Adelaide wicket. "The thing about pink ball cricket, day night cricket is meant to allow Test cricket to be played at night time, it's not meant to change how Test cricket should play," McCullum said.
"I think we saw under lights the pink ball responded a little bit much. I would say that because I'm a batter. Overall, I think it's a roaring success. 120,000 over three days, people are voting with their feet as well, I think it's here to stay which is great."
