MY FRIEND Alicia and I were talking about the rise of the butler's pantry when we agreed that neither of us would be bothered having one even if we could afford it.
After all, how much space do you need to store the baked beans and tea bags?
But then I declared my ultimate dream was to have a linen room in my house.
A big one.
One I where I could sit in a comfy wing chair and gaze around me admiring all the neatly stacked shelves.
You see my house is a Victorian cottage with zero storage, which means I cram the sheets, towels, doonas, blankets and pillow cases for a family of five into a small wardrobe in the bathroom.
Putting the washing away is a nightmare.
When asked about her dream room, Alicia laughed then looked thoughtful.
"Actually, I'd like a walk-in wardrobe," she confessed.
"I like the idea of being able to walk into a space and see my clothes hung neatly instead of jammed into the wardrobe."
We turned to another friend, Roma, and asked what she'd have in a house if she had bucketloads of money.
"I'd like to have my house built around an atrium, so I could truly feel as if the garden was indoors," she said. "It would be really relaxing."
I guess when it comes to the home in your dreams, your only limit is your imagination. So dream big.
