THE smallest room in the house is often the busiest — and we're not talking about the loo. There are a few ways to create more storage in even the smallest space that will help make wash day less stressful.
1) Mount cupboards high on the walls. It can not only double your storage but provide a very safe place to store chemicals away from kids.
2) Not all storage has to be at eye level. It's possible to buy plinths for washers and dryers that include a nice deep drawer.
3) Slim down the tub. Who remembers Nanna's twin concrete laundry tub?
It went the way of the dodo when washing machines were invented. The big stainless-steel single tub is still a fixture in most laundries but most are there only so washer water can go into the drain. A half-size tub will create space that can be used for a cupboard.
4) Box up your stuff. Sort through the contents of the laundry cupboard, then buy boxes with lids (I like the Sistema ones) and a label maker.
You'll be surprised how much more space you have (and how much easier it is to find things) when batteries, light globes, candles and hardware bits all have an easily identifiable home.
