Tell 'em they're dreamin', says Michael Caton in the famous movie The Castle. Now, he has the same message for politicians about coal seam gas mining.
Caton posted a three-minute video on his Facebook page on Friday, imploring viewers to vote for an independent candidate in Barwon "just to shove it up the major parties".
"Driving through the Upper Hunter, 'it looks like something from the dark side of the moon'. The Greens are the way to go, to stop secret plans for 16 new coal mines backed by both major parties," he said in the film, which has been watched almost 100,000 times.
Caton also derided the coal seam gas field running from Camden to Campbelltown.
"That's to say nothing about the kids with the bloody noses, rashes and lung complaints. And AGL reckons that's all right? Not in my book it isn't," he said.
While drawing red lines over electorate borders on a map on the wall, Caton said to the camera: "Politicians trying to spruik their environmental credentials while approving new mines across the state? Tell 'em they're dreamin'."
As the television and radio advertising blackout began, candidates and campaigners turned to social media.
Since Wednesday, Labor leader Luke Foley has been particularly active, sharing 10 Facebook posts and six 'tweets', compared with Premier Mike Baird's six Facebook posts and two tweets.
But Baird released a neat little video about his favourite Subway sandwich spread (it's 'southwest sauce'), a 25th anniversary tribute to wife Kerryn, and photos of a family trip to the Royal Easter show that painted a picture of a Premier who is trustworthy and "in touch".
By comparison, Foley has used Facebook and Twitter to spruik Labor's health policies and continue the anti-privatisation campaign.
Internet savvy has proven to be a successful tactic for several politicians.
US President Barack Obama has more than 3.7 million followers on his Instagram account, which is regularly updated with candid photos.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop's use of emojis has been applauded on social media.
