Police evacuated surrounding houses during a fire at a building in Hammondville early this morning.
Police and other emergency services received reports of a workshop on fire on Walder Road about 2.40am on Thursday.
Due to the workshop believed to have gas cylinders, officers from Liverpool police evacuated about 80 people from houses on surrounding streets.
The fire was extinguished by Fire & Rescue NSW and no cylinders were located.
Residents were able to return to their homes.
The building has major damage as a result and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances behind the incident.
