A REDESIGN of Bigge Park to include a homeless shelter was just one of the ideas a group of Liverpool high school students pitched to the mayor recently.

A group of year 8 and senior students from Liverpool Boys High School presented mayor Ned Mannoun and the design team for Liverpool Council's Building Our New City project with their ideas for how it should cater to the area's high proportion of young people.

School principal Mike Saxon said the students were split into groups that consisted of four to five year 8 students and two senior students.

"Most of the groups focused on Bigge Park and one focused on the Eat Street precinct," he said.

"They focused on making the space very interactive. One group designed Bigge Park to be filled with light and extra security.

"Another saw that homeless people were living in the park so they put a homeless shelter in their design. They realised it was probably impracticable but they still felt it was very important."

Earlier this month, students went on a walking tour of the city then workshopped their ideas and created their models using reverse garbage.

Mr Saxon said the project was a great learning experience for the young people.

"The mayor and the design team were very impressed with the boys' ideas," he said.

"Many of the things which the design team had discussed our boys had come up with, using similar ideas.

"This is their city and this is their park and they have wanted these things for a very long time."
