THE Hume Highway in Liverpool has been ranked third on an insurance company list of worst accident hot spots in Sydney
At the same time Liverpool police insist the Hume Highway is becoming safer.
An annual study conducted by AAMI car insurance revealed the Hume Highway was among the busiest roads in Sydney.
AAMI spokesman Reuben Aitchison said the road was notorious for bumper to bumper traffic and congestion.
"The Hume Highway was plagued by roadworks to widen the road which created more congestion," he said.
"Most roads were not designed for the volume of cars or urban sprawl that now surrounds them and this is evident by the high level of congestion they experience, particularly in peak hour."
Liverpool Police traffic sergeant, Damian Leemon said crash figures in Liverpool had declined since the installation of traffic lights and speed cameras at intersections on the Hume Highway.
"The intersection at Graham Avenue in Casula has improved since Roads and Maritime Services installed traffic lights and a speed camera," he said.
"The upgrade at the intersection of the Cumberland Highway at the Hume Highway has also prevented a lot of collisions and that intersection has improved a lot."
Sergeant Leemon said most car accidents were preventable.
He said rear-end collisions were most common and drivers needed to be observant.
