Mounties plan for action

MOUNTIES rugby league club has started pre-season training.

NSW Cup squad and club head coach Steve Antonelli has mapped out 2014 plans with the NSW Cup, Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield squads.

The NSW Rugby League runs the three competitions.

Chris Hutchison has been appointed Ron Massey Cup coach, replacing Eddie Flahey.

Hutchison coached Parramatta's Harold Matthews Cup under-16 representative team this season.

Mounties' NSW Cup team is a feeder outfit for the Canberra Raiders NRL club.

Mounties made the grand final in last season's Ron Massey Cup and have retained the majority of their squad.

They just missed this year's semi-finals in the NSW Cup.

Mounties football media manager Michael Pugsley said pre-season training would include a mixture of endurance, strength and game simulation.

"We are also bringing back the Saturday training sessions at Wanda sand hills and around Coogee," Pugsley said.

"The squad is shaping up well with a bulk of the premiership-winning C Grade under-19 team retained or moving into the Sydney Shield and Ron Massey Cup squads."

Pugsley said new recruits include Reece Goldsmith and Clay Priest who are training with the Canberra Raiders.

"Mounties will again be the feeder club for the Raiders," Pugsley said.

"The Mounties players will be doing their best to impress Canberra coach Ricky Stuart and his team for selection in the top grade."

Mounties start the season with the international nine-a-side tournament, then a club trial against the Raiders, Ron Massey Cup pre-season competition and additional NSW Cup trials before the competition starts in March.
