THE School of Military Engineering in Moorebank will be remembered.
Referred to as "the home of the sapper", the site is being relocated from Moorebank Avenue to the Holsworthy Army Barracks.
A freight terminal that will house about 1.5 million containers will soon take its place.
But the history made on that site will not be forgotten and two locals, June and Ken Young — who fought to keep the memories alive — couldn't be happier.
The government-owned land is already listed on the Commonwealth Heritage Register because the Department of Defence leases the site. Once that lease ends, the site will no longer be protected.
To maintain the freedom of the city, Liverpool councillors unanimously approved a motion to amend the Local Environment Plan (2008) to include the home of the former School of Military Engineering and the Defence National Storage Distribution Centre as a heritage site.
"I'm very happy the site will be heritage-listed. Hopefully, that's enough to maintain its long and significant history," Mrs Young said.
"The SME is part of Liverpool. It's the only unit in Liverpool that was granted the freedom of the city and that unit still holds the key to the City of Liverpool."
The site, dating back to 1939, has various heritage buildings.
In particular, 20 timber post-and-beam buildings prior to World War II.
The Royal Australian Engineers memorial chapel and monument, the Major-General Sir Clive Steele memorial gates and the Cust Hut are also on the site.
Mrs Young said the history of that site was personal to many army families and it shouldn't be white-washed.
"I stood at the SME and saw my husband and his men leave for Vietnam. Some did not return," she said.
"I saw men get married in that chapel, I saw them farewelled and I saw them honoured. Every Australian engineer considered SME their home. It was the home of the sapper and all sappers consider it sacred."
The museum and the memorial honouring the engineers lost during the Vietnam War will be moved to the new site and sandstone blocks from the chapel will also be moved.
