WITNESSES to this morning’s fatal crash in Villawood have told the Champion speed may have been a factor.
A young man aged in his 20s died after the car he was driving hit a truck and several cars near the intersection of Woodville Road and Kirrang Road at about 10.45am.
Police said the young man was trapped in one of the cars and died at the scene while a male passenger suffered abdominal and chest injuries.
One witness, who had spoken to the deceased man’s mother and another woman involved in the crash, said the car was ‘‘speeding’’ south along Woodville Road when the accident took place.
‘‘The woman told me she was driving in the middle lane with a yellow and white car travelling at excessive speeds on either side of her,’’ she said.
‘‘She told me she then saw the yellow car go slightly over the medium strip and hit a truck before she was hit - causing her car to flip five times.
‘‘The lady said she had her one-year-old child in the back seat but none of them were injured.’’
Another local resident, Charles Grech, said while he didn’t see the accident, he heard it.
‘‘I just heard this huge skid and then a big bang,’’ he said. ‘‘I came out straight away to see what had happened. This is a rotten experience, someone has lost their life.’’
Fighting back tears, a family friend of the deceased man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was shocked at what took place.
‘‘He was a good guy, a really great person,’’ he said.
‘‘I can’t believe what’s happened, I was just with him yesterday and now his dead. I can’t believe this, I’m so shocked.’’
Police said a report would be prepared for Coroner.
Traffic will be affected in the area for a number of hours while emergency services carry out inquiries at the scene however, diversions have been put in place.
Woodville Road is currently closed in both directions, between Binna Burra Street and the Hume Highway.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.
