ADBRI Masonry's DIY landscaping expert Jason Hodges said more homeowners were keen to grow veggies and herbs.
"It's easy, healthy and is a great way to get the kids eating fresh because if they are involved with growing veggies and herbs, they will be keen to reap the rewards and eat them," he said.
Mr Jason Hodges provided some tips for simple weekend outdoor projects to help you get started:
■ Build your own vegetable or flower planter box
Mr Hodges said Adbri Masonry's Miniwall garden edging blocks were great for creating separate spaces.
"Miniwall blocks are incredibly easy to use, as they stack together like kids building blocks without the need for any concrete, mortar or glue," he said. "They can be used to create straight lines, curved lines and even a full circle so there's a shape and style for every yard."
■ Raised garden walls
"A quick, easy and innovative way to maximise areas with limited space is to build a raised garden wall against household walls or fences," Mr Hodges said. "So turn that useless corner of the yard into something great."
■ Vertical garden walls
Even concrete covered backyards or small balconies can be transformed into private gardens with a vertical garden wall. "You can build a vertical garden wall so easily with just Besser blocks," Mr Hodges said. "This structure is perfect for small flowering bulbs such as daffodils or your own personal herbary. Simply stack blocks dry or glue the backs to your existing wall. I advise building longer walls as opposed to higher walls, they're easier to service and have greater stability."
