AS any true rugby league lover knows, the George Hotel, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, is an historic site rivalling the pyramids, the Colliseum and the Parthenon in significance.
For it was on August 29, 1895 that 21 northern clubs held a meeting in the north England town and voted by 20 to 1 to secede from the Rugby Football Union and set up their own Northern Rugby Football Union.
That was the birth of rugby league.
The Coolibah Hotel in Merrylands can't ever rival The George but is about to host its own historic meeting. The Men of League Foundation has branches from North Queensland all the way down the eastern seaboard, in Queensland and NSW country centres and interstate.
But remarkably, despite its reach, there hasn't been a designated Sydney branch.
It's about to change and the Coolibah Hotel will host a meeting this Wednesday at 7pm to establish a western Sydney region committee and all interested parties are invited.
