Liverpool netball mighty strong

LIVERPOOL City Netball Association treasurer Kath Whiteley and secretary Estelle Lawler want to add trophies to the cabinet in the season that starts on April 27 at Woodward Park.

Whiteley is the association's longest-serving executive committee member, with 44 years, and has been with the association since it began.

Lawler has been on the executive committee for 35 years, 20 years as secretary.

Lawler says the association had a successful 2012.

"In the state age championships we won two championships and had two runners-up," she said.

Lawler says she has continued at the association because she loves the kids and the game.

"I love working with the kids and watching them grow," Lawler said.

"Kids are great and they keep you young, keep you on your toes.

"I had daughter play, granddaughters play, and I played myself, as well as umpired, coached, and got into the admin side pretty early on."

Lawler says there are many reasons to get into netball

"My eldest daughter started me in netball, after that I just stayed," Lawler said.

"I just love doing it, if I didn't I wouldn't be there.

"A lot of the kids play for fun, then players come through with amazing talent, like the ones that made the state team, sometimes you can see that talent from when they are eight."

The association has 13 clubs, including the newly added Bossley Park club joined this year, coming from the Fairfield City Netball Association.

The Liverpool association is expecting 1600 to 1700 players to be registered this season.

Lawler says when you add in coaches and officials there can be about 3000 people at their grounds on a Saturday.
