NEW motion picture Flight features a solid performance by Denzel Washington as a substance-abusing airline captain who must face his addictions in the wake of a near disaster.
Washington's character William Whitaker [nicknamed Whip] is first introduced to audiences the morning after a wild night of drinking and drug-taking in an Orlando hotel room with flight attendant Katerina Marquez (Nadine Velazquez).
Whip greets the new day with a hit before taking the controls of a flight to Atlanta.
In the course of the flight, the plane encounters turbulence. Co-pilot Ken Evans (Brian Geraghty) takes control while Whip discreetly drinks alcohol and then takes a nap.
He is jolted awake by more turbulence and the realisation the plane is out of control.
Despite his condition, Whip has no choice but to prepare the plane for a crash landing in a field.
He loses consciousness and wakes to find himself in an Atlanta hospital with minor injuries. Whip later finds that 96 people survived and only five died in the crash.
While under investigation, Whip's blood test reveals his substance abuse, and he faces manslaughter charges.
In the lead-up to his court hearing, Whip tries to break his habits and get his life back on the track.
