Wanderers build solid base in first W-League season

IN A soccer season she said was over all too soon, Western Sydney Wanderers striker Catherine Cannuli, who has played for the Matildas twice, says her team had a great first season despite the W-League season only running for 12 rounds.

"The season went quite quick because of the limited rounds," Cannuli of Prestons said.

"I think money-wise the league can't afford to run [for much longer]."

Cannuli said the biggest highlight of the season for her was at the last game against Sydney FC with the appearance of the Wanderers' support base, The RBB (The Red and Black Block).

"The RBB came out and we had over 1500 people come out and support us," Cannuli said.

"The atmosphere was amazing."

In the 2011 season, Cannuli played for the Roar; in the previous one for Sydney FC.

Cannuli said playing for the Wanderers against Sydney FC made the inaugural derby matches all the more interesting.

"It was pretty exciting," she said. "I've played with most of the Sydney girls," she said.

"At the first match it was still new so it didn't mean so much but the second one was the last game of the year and the crowd made it really feel like a derby.

"The match was quite intense.

"The intensity was a lot higher this time. The atmosphere really pushed it up."

Next season Cannuli hopes the team will continue to improve and that the W-League sees a bigger crowd turn out at matches.

"We are definitely looking for a top four finish next season," Cannuli said.

"We would also love to see bigger crowds and more rounds included. More television coverage and live internet streaming too."
