PASSIONATE youth advocate and community volunteer Michael Rutherford was awarded Liverpool's Young Citizen of the Year.
Mr Rutherford, a former treasurer of the Liverpool Youth Council, was described by his peers as a bright and motivated young man with strong ambition to succeed.
Former youth council associate Bradley Birnie said of Mr Rutherford: "Michael has always been very smart and focused.
"If nothing else, his involvement with local young people is reason enough for him to receive the award.
"He knows what he wants and he is the type of person that will achieve his goals."
The first year university student has been actively exploring ways to reduce homophobic behaviour in schools.
Mr Rutherford was accepted into the NSW Youth Parliament project, and after scoring top marks in his HSC, has been accepted to further his education at the University of Sydney.
He is overseas and was unable to accept the award in person.
