Ordinary people in focus

MICHAEL Stikovic has a knack for storytelling.

The 21-year-old photographer/videographer from Prestons has launched a time-lapse film Heartbeats on the Beat. It captures intimate moments of people using public transport or walking along Sydney's streets.

He said he wanted to remind people to appreciate individual lives and stories and how these linked with their own.

"I'm an observer of people. I find it interesting thinking about what other people are doing," he said.

"I get a kick out of thinking about what everyone else is up to and how their story influences my own."

The graduate student has been passionate about photography for eight years and started the project as a major part of his photography course.

He hoped it would bring back some "empathy" into society.

"We're such busy people that we don't think of others," he said.

"I want to bring light on to other people's stories and capture really special and unique moments.

"I wish to show the complexities of the faceless individuals who coexist with us each day, yet they go unnoticed; their thoughts, their fears, their loves and their stories."

He plans an exhibition in Liverpool and hopes to take the project overseas.
