'Give Christmas gifts that help keep children active'

LIVERPOOL parents are being urged to buy their children Christmas gifts that will encourage them to be physically active this summer.

South Western Sydney local health district director of health promotion, Mandy Williams said one out of four children aged between five and 17 are now overweight or obese.

"Many children sit in front of a computer on social networking sites or play computer games, which is fine but these activities need to be balanced with physical activity," Ms Williams said.

She said gifts like bikes, cricket sets, skipping ropes and other sporting goods were all good present ideas.
