'Commit to Badgerys'

AN urban planner from the University of Western Sydney has called on the state and federal governments to end the squabbling over where to put Sydney's second airport and commit to Badgerys Creek.

Peter Phibbs, from the UWS urban research centre, said building an airport at Badgerys Creek would generate significant economic benefits for the region.

For close to 30 years, more than 1700 hectares of land at Badgerys Creek, purchased under the Hawke government in 1986, has sat idle while politicians baulked at the idea of an airport in the region for fear of potential community backlash from aircraft noise.

But Professor Phibbs said the economic benefits outweighed considerations of aircraft noise.

"Canberra Airport could be considered comparable to the proposed Badgerys Creek airport — and has generated significant employment impacts with only modest air traffic volumes," he said.

"At the end of the day, I believe the people of western Sydney would welcome a new airport, as it would provide a wealth of construction, retail, logistics, air freight and other jobs heading into the future."

Residents living in the area have already expressed their frustration with the indecisiveness of both the state and federal governments.

In an interview earlier this year, resident Jim Harrison told the Champion that he was sick of living next to an invisible airport, and the development restrictions that came with it.

"At this stage we [residents] don't care what the government actually does with the airport site, they own it," he said.

"All I want is to see people given the right to activate their land without restrictions."

Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun will meet with Infrastructure NSW chairman Nick Greiner tomorrow to discuss the airport site, and the proposed federal freight terminal in Moorebank.

Cr Mannoun has publicly opposed the Badgerys Creek site.
