LIVERPOOL City Little Athletics Club members are in ``hibernation'' and waiting for the action that comes with the spring thaw.
As soon as spring arrives the athletes' thoughts turn to a new season of track-and-field competition.
Club president Robert Techera said even though it's winter many club members would start training soon before the 2009/2010 season starts in September.
``The committee has already held meetings to make preparations for next season,'' Techera said.
On Friday nights between September and March, athletes run, jump, leap and throw in track and field events at their headquarters, Dwyer Oval, Warwick Farm.
Techera said many registration days and nights had been organised for August and September at sponsors' venues.
The venues and dates are: McDonald's Megacentre, on Saturday, August 8; Harry's Cafe de Wheels, Thursday, August 13, from 6pm; McGrath Holden, Saturday, August 15, from 10.30am to 12.30pm; McDonald's, Elizabeth Drive, Sunday, August 16; Athlete's Foot, Westfield Liverpool, Thursday, August 20, from 6pm; McDonald's Liverpool South, and McDonald's Moorebank; Saturday, August22, from 10.30am; Dwyer Oval, Warwick Farm, on Friday, August 23, from 10am to 2pm; Athlete's Foot, Westfield Liverpool, Thursday, August27, from 6pm; and at Dwyer Oval, Saturday, August29, from 10am to 2pm.
``We're getting ready for out 38th year,'' Techera said. ``We were established in 1972 and we're one of the oldest and largest clubs in NSW.
``The LCLAC is recognised by the Little Athletics Association of NSW and the 250 clubs throughout NSW as a continually improving club and a leader within the Liverpool Zone.
``Over the past three years, the club has undertaken a vast change in culture, focused on building its presence within the local community, providing even greater opportunities and rewards for its athletes and volunteer helpers.
``We have outstanding support from our sponsors, major names within our community such as Athlete's Foot Liverpool, Westfields Liverpool, McGrath Holden Liverpool, Harry's Cafe de Wheels Liverpool, Kwik Kopy Liverpool, Sain and Co Constructions, Willyware Computers, Home Hollywood Productions and all McDonald's restaurants in the Liverpool area.
``We recognise our high performing athletes but the club has an ever-growing focus on every single athlete, no matter what skill level they may be or any impairment they may have, to constantly improve themselves via breaking the personal best results in their events.
The club has introduced a personal best competition with athletes gaining points for every improvement they make that contributes also to a team and age group point tally.
``This competition has taken away the pressure or let-down of not having to come first every time but rather improve as an individual.
``Our sponsors have enthusiastically assisted us by providing many prizes that we award every week to the athletes. We believe children with healthy bodies and minds are the ingredients to creating better future citizens within our community.''
Techera said the enthusiasm of the members and athletes was shown in the club's growing tally of medals and trophies at all levels of competition throughout the state.
``We offer highly accredited coaching and courses, at no extra cost, to all members who wish to become more involved with their children and within the world's first and greatest sport,'' Techera said. ``With such a colourful history and an even brighter future, all members of the club have great reason to stand tall and proud. Our doors are always open and we welcome new members all year round. Our great team are always ready to assist with any inquiries.''
