Austral lawn bowlers a cut above the rest

01 Jul, 2009 02:21 PM
THE number of top sporting clubs and talents in Liverpool and its outlying rural suburbs never ceases to amaze.

The emergence of lawn bowls in the rural suburbs is a case in point.

For the first time in many years, Austral Bowling Club hosted the zone district representative fours matches between Nepean and Southern Tablelands on Sunday.

Three of Austral's bowlers Steve Wilcock, Tony White and Richard Perry, were in the Nepean teams.

For the record, Southern Tablelands won 120-108.

More importantly, The Hard Yards can report that the way the event was organised and conducted by Austral Bowling Club has impressed the sport's governing body Bowls NSW.

There will be more big lawn bowls tournaments at Austral in future you can bet on it.

A short bike ride from the lawn greens at Austral is the Liverpool BMX Club at Hoxton Park.

Liverpool BMX has 14 riders who will represent Australia in different age and divisional categories at the World Championships in Adelaide from July 23 to July 26.

The Liverpool BMX emblem is a devil and the riders intend to give their rivals a ``helluva'' time in Adelaide.

The Cameron family are long-time members, and Alex, 22, Nicholas, 19, and Megan, 15, will represent their nation.

In rugby union, the Liverpool Bulls need to lift their form after a disappointing 41-5 loss to Rockdale on Saturday at Dwyer Oval.

In rugby league, the All Saints Liverpool DNC Cup team thrashed Mount Annan 38-4 on Sunday, retaining third spot in the Group 6/Western Suburbs competition.

Mounties were too good for Windsor Wolves at Windsor on Sunday, winning 36-24 and staying in the Bundaberg Red Cup finals race.

Next Sunday Mounties will be back on home soil, and will tackle the WA Reds at 3pm.

Woodward Park will be a hive of activity from July 11 to July 13, when the Liverpool City Netball Association will host the NSW State Age Titles.

The official draw has been released and Liverpool will be fielding teams in the under12s, 13s, 14s and 15s age groups.

A total of 103 teams and more than 1200 players from associations across NSW will be participating.
