Zoning protester accuses council

01 Jul, 2009 02:36 PM
THE Rowe family of Bringelly say a refused development application has opened their eyes to the workings of Liverpool Council.

Pauline and Steve Rowe applied to the council to build a second home on their property, in which their daughter Fiona would live.

But their application was rejected because it was not appropriate to the zoning in their area, which is RU1 primary producing under the 2008 Liverpool Local Environment Plan.

``We had no idea we were under that zoning,'' Mrs Rowe said.

``That completely does not apply to us. We're not farmers and neither are the majority of the people here. We should all be under rural residential.''

Mrs Rowe said the council failed to keep people living in the area's western suburbs informed.

That's why she's holding a Rural Residents Community Forum next Tuesday, July 7, for locals to discuss the issues that affect them.

``There are so many things that a lot of our neighbours aren't aware of, because Liverpool Council is focused only on the urban suburbs,'' Mrs Rowe said. ``When the 1997 LLEP was brought in, they sent a letter informing us that it was up for public exhibition and inviting comment, but when the 2008 LLEP was brought in, we didn't hear anything about it and the changes in it had a huge effect on us. And we wouldn't have found out about what they mean unless we applied for a DA.''

The meeting will start at 7pm at the Hubertus Country Club, 205 Adams Road, Luddenham.

A Liverpool Council spokeswoman said the council went over and above the State Government requirements when it was advertising its 2008 LLEP.

``The council undertook a longer exhibition period than necessary of three months,'' the spokeswoman said. ``Presentations were made to all community forums prior to exhibition and again during the exhibition period. Notice of the public hearing was published in the local newspapers and on the council's website and notices were also placed at community centres, child-care facilities, libraries and other key locations throughout the area.''
